Poem of the Week By Wendy Cartwright

Biography:

Wendy Cartwright is a poet/author/reporter/columnist/weirdo out of Columbus, Indiana. Her travels have taken her as far as Mayan Ruins and as near as the filling station. Her undiscerning tastes allow her to find creative fodder regardless of location.  She has been published in various print anthologies and been featured in online publications. With three self-published books, she has the most of anyone on her block.

Backstory:

We are conditioned to wait for the next big thing and to savor it when it comes. We take photographs and hold on to them. We worship them as shrines. I have experienced many more profound moments and feelings in the spaces between. I don’t believe in coincidences. I have trained myself to notice the small happenings in the interim that were placed there just for me. It doesn’t matter who or what placed them there, those are the moments I savor.

Scenes From Downtown

There are feelings I hope I never forget,
some I already have.
I recall the moments, the thoughts,
but the sensation is lost.

I know this because,
when the memories come,
even as I feel electric,
I’m compelled to chase an untamable dragon
that I’m certain cannot be caught.

Most of them were firsts
a few lasts,
all signaled changes in my being,
the fibers of my whole rewoven.

The best are the unexpected,
my soul transformed on a side road
by an angel set in the path.

I’ve learned to keep my eyes open
my skin primed in the interim
to notice the in-between,
there lie the moments of inspiration.
